The Chaplin, Breazeale, and Chaplin Papers contain correspondence, bills, receipts, notebooks, newspapers, dockets, and cashbooks created and accumulated by the law firm of Chaplin, Breazeale, and Chaplin of Natchitoches, La., and its chief partners, Thomas P. Chaplin and Phanor Breazeale. The records document Breazeale's participation in the economic, political, and educational affairs of the Natchitoches area and Chaplin's involvement in public education in the Natchitoches area, particularly the history and administration of the Louisiana State Normal School. Also included are papers of Natchitoches Parish sheriffs, Samuel Myers Hyams and James C. Hughes, and parish judges, J.E. Breda and A.V. Coco. Other records concern the construction of the Natchitoches Parish courthouse, prominent Natchitoches Parish families, land cases in Louisiana, and Louisiana politics.
